Landmark songs by pioneering artists: here be a dozen top tracks that defined our listening habits over the past double-century of CR editions.

01 JOURNEY – Don't Stop Believin' (Live In Houston '81) 'Just a small town girl' became an immortal phrase as this 1981 live rendition of Don't Stop Believin' soundtracked the grand finale The Sopranos in 2007. And subsequently won a Classic Rock award. A major hit in the heart of Journey's commercial peak, the performance was spearheaded by iconic vocalist Steve Perry - who insisted on knowing what happened in the TV series' swansong before allowing the track to be used. Happily for the band, Don't Stop Believin' has since become something of an iconic 'choon - even covered/murdered in Bloody Glee.

02 ALICE COOPER - I’ll Bite Your Face Off Because sometimes it just makes total sense to declare: “I’ll bite yer face ahhff!!" Or it certainly did for Alice Cooper in 2011, reunited for the first time since 1974 with the full original Cooper band for Welcome 2 My Nightmare - Alice's 26th studio album (yes, 26th... shit). Incidentally, 2011 was also the year in which Alice was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Nice.

03 SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY & THE CONSPIRATORS - Anastasia His multi-singer (self-titled) solo debut affirmed that, while Slash could knock out a good tune with the likes of Iggy Pop and Fergie, he and Myles Kennedy had a special chemistry. Accordingly, the pair formed an actual band and produced the rather excellent Apocalyptic Love -released in 2012, including this triumphant rock nugget. The 'official' beginning of a stellar partnership in 21st-century rock'n'roll.

04 DIO - Rainbow In The Dark (Live) On May 16, 2010 Ronnie James Dio died at the age of 67. Former Black Sabbath/Elf/Rainbow frontman, populariser of the 'metal horns' hand gesture, leader of his own band Dio - with whom he delivered this strident piece of heavy goodness - Ronnie secured a place in history as one of heavy metal's foremost legends. The overwhelmingly reverential reponse to our Facebook anniversary tribute earlier this year was quite dizzying. Rest in peace, Ronnie. Gone but far from forgotten.

05 JOE BONAMASSA - The Ballad Of John Henry It doesn't take a blues nerd to notice that Joe Bonamassa has become a little bit massive since the inception of Classic Rock. From scruffy prodigy - playing with Buddy Guy as a 12-year-old - to sharp, modern yet soulful guitar hero, the guy has defined 'blues rock' as we know it today. And this colourful, impassioned epic offers sound evidence that this is a very good thing.

06 GINGER - Baby Skies Bouncing sweetly into 2012, Baby Skies is a little piece of Ginger's 555% album. Produced on the back of a PledgeMusic campaign, and released in its entirety online, it played a notable role in reinventing the way artists communicate with their fans - helping haul the music industry into the internet age, and paving the way for many more online, band-to-fan initiatives to come.

07 BLACK STONE CHERRY - Bad Luck And Hard Love From anonymous Kentucky band to Classic Rock cover stars, the rise of Black Stone Cherry in our lifetime has been nothing short of colossal. Fresh from their strident latest album Magic Mountain, Bad Luck And Hard Love shows what heavyweight, no-messing southern hard rockers they've grown into. Dirty swagger, deep riffery, unadulterated soul... Oh yeah, that's the stuff.

08 PORCUPINE TREE - Open Car (Live) Another one to have risen stratospherically since our birth, Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson has gone from little-known experimentalist to the king of modern-day progressive rock; or 'nu prog', if you will. His thrillingly multi-textured solo records have garnered hefty praise (most recently The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories) in 2013), but his work with PT -including this rocking cut originally on 2005's Deadwing - laid compelling, enigmatic foundations.

09 STONE TEMPLE PILOTS - Black Heart Forgotten how much you like Stone Temple Pilots, alt.rock lords of the 90s? Then enjoy a happy awakening (and their return to form) with 2013's Black Heart (from the High Rise EP), featuring newly instated Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington on vocals. Gleeful guitar hook, joyously familiar pipes, quietly grungy undertones. A superb comeback.

10 VON HERTZEN BROTHERS - Flowers And Rust This Finnish crew came of age, and made a first-rate stamp on the rising 'nu prog' movement, with 2013's excellent Nine Lives, a record which sealed their reputation as a serious class act (and a stellar live act) to be reckoned with. Pensive rock with a more-ish singalong chorus? Yes, that'll do perfectly.

11 KILLING JOKE - European Super State The original foursome comprising post-punk innovators Killing Joke rejoined forces (for the first time in nearly 30 years, and following the death of bassist Paul Raven in 2007) for Absolute Dissent in 2010, marking their 30th anniversary in the process, and released this little beauty as a single. Cool as hell, and bestowed with a Classic Rock accolade in the same year, it was grand to have them back.

12 MOTT THE HOOPLE - All The Young Dudes (Live) Written by David Bowie All The Young Dudes is nonetheless synonyme with Mott, who reunite for shows to a delighted reception in 2009 and again in 2013, from which this fine recording is taken. You can feel the heat of the swaying lighters.

Somit gibt es also häufig angebliche Treffer.
