Records has quietly released the single "Extremis" by the British/French
techno/ambient collective HAL, and featuring vocals by actress Gillian
Anderson of "The X-Files." The single, available on CD and cassette format
beginning May 20, is part of a larger album project involving Anderson due
later this summer.
Infused by Anderson's breathy vocals, "Extremis" offers a sultry
introduction to the upcoming "Future -- A Journey Through The Electronic
Underground," a double album of tracks compiled by Anderson spanning a wide
range of futuristic techno, ambient, drum 'n' bass, and trip hop music. The
"Future" collection is slated for U.S. release on July 29 on Virgin Records.
The entire project -- an impromptu, one-off affair -- traces its
beginnings to a British television science program: Anderson hosted nine
episodes of the BBC-TV documentary series "Future Fantastic," which featured
theme music performed and produced by HAL. A collective of techno/ambient
sound alchemists, HAL's creative core includes England's Raheen (a.k.a. Paul
Gallagher) and Savage (Duncan Lomax), and France's Px (Pascal Derycke). HAL's
1996 debut album, "Gorilla Conspiration," had caught the attention of the
"Future Fantastic" production team, who chose to use the music throughout the
documentary series.
Surrounded by HAL's soundscapes while filming her host segments, Anderson
immediately became fascinated by their evocative style, and eventually
collaborated with HAL on an original track, " Extremis," contributing her
voice to the musical melange.
The "Extremis" single is accompanied by an otherworldly, erotic music
video created by the "Future Fantastic" production team, which depicts
Anderson in a futuristic dream sequence poised between consciousness and
fantasy.
Anderson is well known to millions of fans worldwide for her role as FBI
agent Dana Scully on the Fox network's phenomenally successful television
program "The X-Files." Her participation in the "Extremis" single and
"Future" album represents an enjoyable, albeit brief, departure from the full-
time demands of Anderson's acting career. Look forward to much more
