Never led it be said that The Flower Kings lack ambition. Latest opus Desolation Rose finds the Swedish proggers tackle such weighty themes as "perpetual war, famine, environmental threats and religious conflicts" - and, more explicitly, the media's role in it all.

Members of Dream Theater, Sympony X, Stratovarius and Planet X fetch up on Atomic Ark, the latest effort from the quintet led by French keyboardist Vivien Lalu. Recorded in various locations, the album is a cinematic tour de force heaped high with progessive metal.

07 THE OPIUM CARTEL - White Wolf
Anyone pining for the return of classic 80s art-pop should take note of Norway's The Opium Cartel, an extracurricular vehicle for White Willow guitarist-songwriter Jacob Holm-Lupo. Second album Ardor is a warm, synth-stuffed tribute to the music of his youth, with various guest singers.

08 WITHEM - Miracle
Founded by Norwegians Øyvind Voldmo Larsen, Ketil Ronold and Frank Nordeng Røe, the metallic prog of Withem, ably fronted by Ole Aleksander Wagenius, has earned the band companions to Dream Theater and Circus Maximus.

Raucous Canadians Protest The Hero turned to their fans for help with making their fourth album Volition, which was financed via the crowd-funding site Indiegogo. With Lamb Of God's Chris Adler keeping the drumstool warm for new man Mike Ieradi, lead-off single Clarity serves as a mighty primer for the main event.

Born in England but now based in Norway, jazz pianist and composer Roy Powell has been a key feature of InterStatic and Naked Truth in recent years. His latest project is Mumpbeak, for which he's joined by such stellar lights as Pat Mastelotto, Tony Levin and Bill Laswell.
