"For our début album we have chosen French music, partly because France has a long-standing saxophone tradition with an extensive repertory, and partly because I studied in France and we are immensely fond of French music. But we did not want to play anything from the usual saxophone repertory as there are already so many fantastic recordings. Instead, we selected and, where necessary, arranged lesser-known and unknown works by leading French composers rarely found in the original saxophone repertory. In this way I have been able to help myself to music dating from a period when the saxophone did not yet exist. Arrangements have always played a major part in the history of music, and I believe that the art of transposition and transcription should be much more thoroughly explored for every instrument.
In spite of the joy, vitality and humour – notably in the third movements of both Poulenc’s and Decruck’s sonatas and in Corniot’s Danse pastorale – the underlying mood in all the works that make up the present CD is one of melancholy. For us, melancholy is synonymous with wistful dreaming, sadness, reflection and longing –
a profoundly human mood that we mostly seek to avoid in our fast-moving, superficial world. This is not something that we ourselves want. On this CD we do not hear mere effects, there are no breakneck tempi or pretentious ornaments, even the fast movements are moderate and gentle. Am I myself a melancholy person? I am pleased to say that I am! But I think that French music, which Magda and I love so much, brought melancholy to us rather than the other way round – and for that we are very grateful."
