During the First half of the 1980's, when pop music was dominated by new technology and in particular synthesisers, one of Britain's major technostars was John Foxx, who took seven singles into the UK chart in less than four years. Foxx (real name Dennis Leigh) first came to prominence in the late 70's as the frontman of Ultravox. With Foxx, Ultravox was one of the world's most innovative acts, although somewhat less successful than they later became after Midge Ure was recruited in late 1978 as a replacement.Foxx then embarked on
a solo career, and his first (and highest chart placed) single was 'Underpass', which was followed later that year by
'No-One Driving' and, at the end of the year, by 'Miles Away'. All were hits, but of lesser magnitude than they deserved - the reason was almost certainly that Foxx was continually in search of musical innovation, something which is not necessarily found without false starts. 'Dancing Like A Gun' (interesting title?) was a 1981 single which didn't chart, but by 1983, Foxx was back in the chart with 'Endlessly'. In addition to these tracks, this retrospective of John Foxx includes three remarkable videos made for his other recordings, 'He's A Liquid', in which Foxx examines a clone of himself, is bizarre, the brief but compelling 'Stars On Fire' perfectly conveys his ceaseless quest for innovation, and the uncharacteristically cheerful 'Lose All Sense Of Time', with its very Monty Pythonesque video, shows another side of this multi-facet character whom Gary Numan credited as a major influence. Foxx went on to own his own recording studio, 'The Garden' (also the title of one of his albums), but appears to have stopped making records on his own account. It will not be a surprise if he re-emerges with
something of great interest eventually, be it musical or in some other artistic field. His greatest gift was his innovatory
qualities as displayed here.
