AMG: 'Though it could've used a snappier title, Drive-Thru Records and Purevolume.com really is a collaboration between the successful California punk-pop imprint and Pure Volume, an online community that helps unsigned bands with promotion and networking. The hook-up makes sense. Sites like Pure Volume cater to the same youthful, Internet-savvy audience that supports the punk-pop and emo scene -- in fact, acts like Early November came to Drive-Thru as a direct result of fan page and MP3-based buzz, and appear here with "Sesame Smeshame", along with songs from established combos like Fallout Boy ("Saturday"), Juliana Theory ("Can't Suspend It"), Matchbook Romance ("My Eyes Burn"), and other Drive-Thru acts like Hidden in Plain View and Steel Train. While those selections are altogether strong, this set's true draw is its wealth of material from unsigned and upcoming groups. In addition to 25 songs over two CDs, Drive-Thru Records... includes over 100 MP3 tracks, most from current or former Pure Volume artists. (Gym Class Heroes' name-checking rap "Taxi Driver" is a highlight.) The Format gets disc one off to a great start with "Tie the Rope," a smart, Sloan-ish indie pop number from their underrated 2003 effort Interventions and Lullabies. Houston Calls integrates fizzy vintage keys into its energetic guitar sound, unsigned New Jersey outfit Echo Screen recalls classic Get Up Kids, and fellow unsigneds Goodbye Celebration and Abbott Hayes turn in efforts filled with the eager guitars, plaintive chord changes, and rousing vocals typical of the genre. Disc two's Firescape ("His Midas Touch"), Self Against City ("Speechless"), and Never Heard of It ("Let's Go All the Way") continue capably with this sound, but California's Hellogoodbye offers some quirky variety in "Homewrecker" -- it sounds like a dance party mash-up of Whirlwind Heat and Wheatus -- and the Something Corporate side project Jack's Mannequin features an engaging piano-led sound. A little more variety of this type would have gone a long way. But with its mix of signed acts and hopefuls and the overachieving swath of MP3s, Drive-Thru Records and Purevolume.com is still a great pickup for fans of the label or website.'
