You don't have to be Night Ranger's titular Sister Christian to understand the appeal of the open road: the freedom, the promise of adventure, the heady perfume of sizzling tarmac and the ever-changing backdrop of breath-taking scenery. And really, what better Soundtrack for cruising down a two-lane blacktop in a convertible the size of a tank (with fins that would shame Jaws and a long-haired beauty writhing across the hood) than AOR? With its soaring choruses, blue-sky harmonies, riffs that dwarf mountain ranges and capacity for high drama, life-changing romance and exhilarating joy, this here CD captures AOR in its fullest majesty, boasting new material from legends of the genre, a taste of the kind of magic being wrought by AOR's young guns, and more Swedes than Sunday lunch round your Nan's. So grab this freebie, glue it into your car stereo, press that pedal to the metal and get motorin'...

01 FM – Tough Love The release of Metropolis in 2010 was manna from heaven for FM fans, the legendary British AOR group re-forming after 15 years of silence and sounding as fresh, alive and anthemic as ever. Three years on, the reunited FM repeat that feat with Rockville, their seventh full-length achieving an impressive balance of sleek rock power and hook-laden songcraft, as evidenced on this blistering cut.

02 DIEMONDS - Take On The Night Their debut EP In The Rough having surfaced in October 2008, to say the first full-length from glammed-up Toronto hellions Diemonds is 'long-awaited' would be a hefty understatement. Fronted by Priya Panda - described as a 'denim demoness' on page 21 - the group's wild and chorus-slaked rock'n'roll makes like a 21st Century Mötley Crüe, with sass to spare.

03 CRASHDÏET - Cocaine Cowboys Glam rock is, of course, a genre with more than its fair sure of cocaine, and more than a couple of cowboys too (albeit ones who ride on steel horses). Leave it to Swedish glam revivalists Crashdïet, those of the unnecessary umlaut, to write the definitive anthem praising both cocaine and cowboys as the lead single from their sleaze-drenched fourth album – a song about a different kind of ‘line’ dancing, maybe ...

04 W.E.T. - Rise Up W.E.T.'s self-titled 2009 debut album was that rarest of things, an all-star collaborative project - between Talisman and former Journey frontman Jeff Scott Soto, Eclipse guitarist and producer Erik Mårtensson and Work Of Art guitarist Robert Säll - that was more than the sum of its impressive parts. The heart-racing, sky-scraping anthems of their follow-up album suggest that lightning has, thankfully, struck twice here..

05 MORITZ - Mercury Falling AOR's a genre with a soft spot for fairy tales, and the happy ending life delivered to London melodic rockers Moritz – reuniting twenty years on from their 1987 split and finally recording the album they never got a chance to first time round - is a fairytale to warm every rocker's heart, Their excellent new album SOS, meanwhile, draws inspiration from rock's 70s heyday, as our feature on page 76 explains.

06 NUBIAN ROSE - Ever See Your Face Four Swedes and an Amazonian Ethiopian, Nubian Rose are certainly an eyeful; steeped in melodic 80s rock, and updating this gargantuan sound for the 21st Century, they're a titanic treat for your ears as well. Frontwoman Sofia Lilja's vocals are towering, massive, and more than well-matched by the riff-fringed tuneage proffered by her bandmates on the group's mammoth debut album.

07 ALAN HEWITT – Save Me A self-described piano man with an impressive CV (past collaborators have included Earth Wind & Fire's Maurice White and Warrant), Hewitt currently tickles ivories for the Moody Blues, but also has his own song to sing. There's ten of those songs collected on his latest solo album, High Fidelity: songs of sophistication and poise, of soul and sweetness, with a hard rock edge. Totally your thing, we'd bet.

08 VADUZ - Workin' Band Iowans Vaduz - website reliably informs us that their name is pronounced 'Vuh-dooz’ - first hit the road in the late 80s, before taking a fifteen year holiday from the rock and roll, re-forming in 2010 with the ambition recording their first album's worth of material. Aided by fan contributions via Kickstarter, Better Days is finally upon us, revealing a group of uncommon fire, skill and flair. Check 'em out.

09 HEARTBREAK RADIO - Angeline A spin-off project from Swedish group Last Autumn's Dream, Heartbreak Radio's self-titled all-star debut album surfaced in 2005, an instant favourite of true AOR heads. The follow-up arrives after an eight-year gap, but On Air is more than worth the wait, an expert, eclectic and impassioned tribute to the golden era of AOR, and artists like Toto, Chicago and even Michael Bolton. Classy, classic stuff.

10 LIONVILLE - The Only Way Is Up The brainchild of Genovese musician and songwriter Stefan Lionetti (alongside his brother Allesandro), Lionville are Italy's premier AOR outfit, and II the follow-up to their eponymous 2011 debut, is as loving a tribute to that super-polished and dreamy West Coast sound as you'll hear this year; highlights include a cover of Waiting For A Star To Fall, and a guest appearance from Chicago's Bill Champlain.

11 VOODOO VEGAS - Mary Jane "Rock'n'roll how it used to be!" bellow Voodoo Vegas on their website, but the truth is perhaps this is what rock'n'roll should sound like now. Formed in Bournemouth in 2006, the group have been honing their riff-heavy, hook-laden noise ever since, in preparation for the release of their speaker-splintering debut LP, The Rise Of Jimmy Silver, which offers up a lean 34 minutes of classic rock, with not a second wasted.

12 SAPPHIRE EYES - You're My Wings Songwriter Niclas Olsson and singer Thomas Bursell already have previous together, in their 2004 group Second Heat. In the interim, Olsson has focused upon his acclaimed female-fronted AOR project Alyson Avenue, but with the inauguration of Sapphire Eyes, he and Bursell are reunited for a self-titled album that promises 'pure classy Scandinavian AOR', and delivers with both barrels!

13 LAST AUTUMN'S DREAM - 2nd Look These cool cats have just dropped their ninth album since forming in 2002 - slackers they ain't! Their Scandi AOR is of the highest quality, but it's not the sweat they spent on it that you hear when spinning Nine Lives - rather, this group's confident blend of rock muscle an smooth songwriting chops is so effortless, tunes like the masterful 2nd Look glide from the Speakers to your grateful, grateful ears...
Taken from: Ten Tangerine Tales on Bad Reputation

14 TASTE - Our Dreams So you're a fan of AOR, right? Well then, perhaps you'll also be a fan of KOR - that's Keyboard Oriented Rock, an AOR sub-genre with the accent on the organ, and a sound well-practised by Swedish brothers Christoffer and Felix Borg, together known as Taste. Their self-titled debut borrows leaves from the hallowed books of FM, Europe, Danger Danger and Bon Jovi, so you'd better get your air-keytars ready!
Taken from: Taste on CD Baby

15 ROCKY SHADES' WILDSIDE RIOT - All Hail The Wasted Former frontman of NWOBHM stalwarts Wrathchild, Rocky 'Wrekkless' Shades' latest endeavour Wildside Riot are, by their own description, merchants of 'melodic sleaze'. Promising 'incredible live energy' and 'exciting attitude', this raw salvo from their new album suggests that Rocky does not speak with forked tongue - indeed, you could say he's unleashed another na-na-nukklear rokket!

Somit gibt es also häufig angebliche Treffer.
