BONAFIDE – Bombo
Kicking off the CD are our favourite Swedish hard rockers, with the title track from their 2013 album. Incidentally, according to frontman Pontus Snibb, the band named themselves after two of the biggest heroes - John Bonham and Bon Scott, the latter of whom closes the CD.

THE URBAN VOODOO MACHINE FEATURING WILKO JOHNSON - Heroin (Put My Brothers In The Ground)
A nifty little hoedown that sees these punkabillies link up with the guitar legend, who appears intent on cramming as much activity into the final month of his life as he can.

THE REVEREND HORTON HEAT - Let Me Teach You How To Eat
Jim Heath (who effectively is Reverend Horton Heat) has been ploughing his own punky, skiffly furrow for over two decades now. He's one of those cult figures who could still easily burst into the mainstream via a fluke hit. Perhaps even with this single.

THE TREATMENT - Emergency
Hugely catchy track from the Cambridge hard rockers' upcoming second album. The Treatment formed at school in the late noughties and have spent the last few years more than paying their dues - touring extensively and supporting Alice Cooper, Mötley Crüe and Kiss, among others along the way. Might 2014 be the year when all their hard work pays off?.

BEASTÖ BLANCÖ - Live Fast Die Loud
Not subtle and not clever, but hey, rock'n'roll was never supposed to be. Alice Cooper bassist Chuck Garric is the mastermind behind this project that has at least one celebrity fan - apparently Johnny Depp likes the cut of their jib and has described their album as "truly great and wonderfully life-affirming".

06
FLUFFY JACKETS - Why Don't You Smile
The name might conjure up images of baked potatoes rather than blues rock, but the music has some serious pedigree behind it. Jacket's main man, Helge Rognstad, is backed on his track by ex-Whitesnake bassist Neil Murray and drummer Robert Hall, who used to play in the Jerry Lee Lewis Band. Plus it was recorded at the birthplace of rock'n'roll, Sun Studios in Memphis.

AUGUSTINES – Cruel City
Formerly known as We Are Augustines, with their upcoming second album these Brooklynites have shifted their style away from indie rock to something with a bit more bite. Imagine Arcade Fire if they were more direct, had more attitude and wrote better songs.

WELL HUNG HEART - This Is Not Love
This intriguing but yuckily-named duo comprise Californian Greta Valenti on sultry vocals and multi-instrumentalist Robin Davey, an expat Brit who is apparently the youngest person inducted into the UK Blues Hall Of Fame. They tease twist like a more muscular, sexier White Stripes. You're advised to check them out when they support The Hoax on tour in April.

THE QUIREBOYS - Mother Mary
Spike and co have always been able to turn their hand to a cracking power ballad, and this is one of their best. The band go into 2014 in rude health, commercially, having just released their biggest selling album since the 90s. They celebrate their 30th anniversary this year too.

10
RED DRAGON CARTEL - Feeder
One of the first tracks to emerge from Jake E. Lee's new project. The ex-Ozzy guitarist brought some bigname vocalists for his album, including ex-Maiden man Paul Di'Anno and, on this track, Cheap Trick's Robin Zander.

SUPERSUCKERS - Something About You
Eddie Spaghetti and his self-proclaimed 'Greatest Rock'N'Roll Band In The World' are a curious lot. Loved by their fans and many critics, they remain obscure to the outside world. But as this superb piece of slide-enhanced, foot-on-the-monitor power-pop shows, they might just be hitting their peak.

12
TIGER BELL - I Don't Want To Hear About Your Band!
Just under two minutes' worth of pogoing punkrock fun that takes aim at the sort of hapless chap who uses the old 'I'm in a band too' chat-up line.
'If you were any good I would have heard about you before,' the lead Bell points out.

TAINTED NATION - Dare You
Alongside Genesis and Foo Fighters, you can now add this lot to the list of bands shaped by drummers who turned frontman. Pete Newdeck used to hit 'em for Eden's Curse before deciing he fancied his chances out front and formed Tainted Nation. On the evidence of this track, his move has paid off.

BLITZKRIEG - Sahara
Eastern-influenced song that's one of highlights of the metal veterans' most recent album,
Back From Hell, which also included a cover of Metallica's
Seek And Destroy. Hetfield, Ulrich and co had covered Blitzkrieg on one of their early UK singles.

BON SCOTT - Carey Gully
This exceedingly rare song was recorded in the summer of 1974 and sounds a world away from the music Scott would make just a few months later when he joined AC/DC. Pastoral, reflective and more than a wee bit folksy, it reveals a side to him that many fans are completely unaware of.
