Buzzoven exploded onto the early 90s d.i.y. scene in a whirlwind of sharp metallic chops over sludgy punk, heavy feedback, and truly awe-inspiring live shows that dragged the audience into the dark places of the band's dementia. Simultaneously self-destructive and musically innovative, Buzzoven is one of the seminal bands of the underground loud music scene of the time, alongside bands like Born Against, Rorschach, and Man Is The Bastard.
"Welcome to Violence" collects the band's early Allied Records recordings, the "To A Frown" full-length, and the EPs "Wound" and "Unwilling to Explain." Hatred, pain, anger, violence, addiction and depression boiled over in both the lyrics and the music, and were ignited by the band's legendary live performances. Walking a tightrope between precision and pure mayhem, the very explosiveness that made Buzzoven so crucial was what caused their instability.
After forming in 1990 out of the ashes of the band Sewer Puppet in North Carolina, Buzzoven quickly gained a cult following up and down the East Coast, and after the release of the "Wound" and "Unwilling..." EPs the band trekked out to the west coast, in a tour that culminated in the three-day recording of "To a Frown" with sonic guru Billy Anderson (The Melvins, Swans, Ludicra). Their second full length, "Sore," was issued by Roadrunner Records in 1994, and the band imploded and restructured continually throughout the ensuing years, with original member Kirk Fisher being the only constant through their sporadic follow-up albums, "At a Loss" and "Revelation: Sick Again." Dixie went on to be in Weedeater (on Crucial Blast Records).
The band's nascent, primal recordings collected here ooze with a rare honesty and intensity that captures a young, hungry and desperate band bristling with undiluted ferocity. These releases are already legendary in their own right, but had drifted out of print in recent years with the folding of Allied Records. Now Alternative Tentacles has collected, compiled, and re-mastered them, as well a re-packaging them in amazing new artwork by Arik Moonhawk Roper (High on Fire, Sleep). Now the early Buzzoven records are back in the hands of heavy music aficionados, where they belong- and the violence is just as intimidating and intoxicating as it was when the band first collided with the underground 15 years ago!
