1 - This Irish DJ and producer filters his love for obscure soundtracks and '60s and '70s soul through modern electronic dance styles. This track, from his current LP Bow Down to the Exit Sign, is a clever mix of hip-hop, funky European soundtrack music, and heady electronics.
2 - Popular myth has it that when Kraftwerk's Florian Schneider heard the first Suicide album, from which this track is taken, he said he would kill someone if he didn't get his own copy. Suicide's sparse, edgy electro-blues is a perfect soundtrack to the band's inner-city New York home. This 1977 cut is mirrored in the minimal techno of today.
3 - Duplaix combines a vocal delivery that harkens back to the classic soul of Gamble & Huff and the classic house of Fingers Inc. with drum 'n' bass beats at a house tempo. This sound has been called drum 'n' house or "house not house," but we just call it good music.
4 - Here, under his Ananda Project handle, Atlanta's Chris Brann has given us a beautiful deep-house track. "Cascades of Color" fuses a soulful vocal with a driving, spacious groove that is dripping with warm electronics.
5. - 8.: THE OM SAMPLER [Om founded 1995 by John Cornett, Chris Smith AKA DJ Fluid]
5 - This Andy Caldwell mix delivers smooth, soulful house.
