Dedication
QUITE NEAR MY HOME IN BEDFORD HILLS, NEW YORK, THERE IS THE ANTIOCH BAPTIST CHURCH. I WAS MADE AWARE OF THEIR CHORUS BY CAROLYN REED, A GOOD FRIEND OF MY FAMILY. SHE KNEW I LOVED GOSPEL SINGING, AND SHE ASSURED ME THAT THIS PARTICULAR CHORUS WAS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF THAT ART. CAROLYN TOOK ME TO A SERVICE, AND I WAS GENUINELY KNOCKED OUT BY THE SINGING. AS LED BY THEIR CHORUS MASTER EARL BROWN, AND HIS TWO TALENTED DAUGHTERS, THE SINGERS PRODUCED FERVENT, JOYOUS, AND BEAUTIFUL SOUNDS, AND I WAS INSTANTLY OVERCOME WITH THE WISH TO PLAY AND RECORD WITH THEM. I WAS HAPPY WHEN IT TURNED OUT THAT THEY WERE WILLING, AND SUBSEQUENTLY, ANGEL RECORDS AND PHIL RAMONE MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR ALL OF US TO GET TOGETHER IN MANHATTAN CENTER AND MAKE FOUR TRACKS. TO MY GREAT REGRET, CAROLYN COULD NOT BE THERE TO TAKE PRIDE IN THE CHORUS THAT DAY; SHE HAD LEFT US, BUT I AM HAPPY TO DEDICATE THIS RECORD TO HER MEMORY.
-ANDRÉ PREVIN
André Previn
André Previn was born in Berlin, but emigrated with his family to California shortly before the Second World War. He continued his musical studies, including composition with Joseph Achron and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and conducting with Pierre Monteux. As a young man, he made a name for himself as a brilliantly successful composer of film music and as a pianist, in concerts, chamber music and jazz. Mr. Previn's conducting career now extends over the last 25 years and encompasses every major orchestra in the world. Long term relationships have included the Music Directorship of the Houston Symphony, the Principal Conductorship of the London Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for 11 years and the Music Directorship of the Pittsburgh Symphony. From 1985 – 1989 he was Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. At the same time, he served as Musical Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
His work with other orchestras — and in particular, with the LSO, has taken him on innumerable tours around the globe and has resulted in an enormous catalogue of recordings covering every conceivable part of the orchestral repertoire. Mr. Previn's work on television has also been definitive: his regular series of programs with the LSO in the 1970's had a major impact on audiences throughout Britain and did much to create a new public for classical music. He appears with the Vienna Philharmonic every season and has regularly conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony and Philadelphia Orchestras. Recent engagements have included concerts with the Cleveland, New York, Pittsburgh and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Royal Concertgebouw and Dresden Staatskapelle Orchestras. The 1992/93 season sees Andre Previn return to the London Symphony Orchestra as Conductor Laureate.
Mr. Previn not only manages to find time to play chamber music on the piano, but also to play occasional concertos. He has also continued to be active as a composer and his works include "Principals," commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony and "Reflections," commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Other successful works have included "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour," written by him jointly with Tom Stoppard and by now, performed all over the world; a piano concerto commissioned by Vladimir Ashkenazy; a song-cycle premiered in London by Dame Janet Baker, and a song-cycle written for Kathleen Battle entitled "Honey & Rue," which was recently premiered at Carnegie Hall and received great critical acclaim. In March 1993, Mr. Previn's new cello sonata for Yo Yo Ma was given its premiere in Amsterdam by the composer and Yo Yo Ma.
Mr. Previn lives in the USA with his wife, Heather and their children.
