The LOUIS ARMSTRONG RECORDING of " THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS"
Surely there can be no more fitting final recording by the great and greathearted Louis Armstrong than this treatment of Clement Clark Moore's "THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS." It is the last professional work that the wondrous "Satchmo" did and Lorillard could not have made a better choice than to bring you this unique recording of the Christmas poem which has been a favorite with all mankind so many years.
Louis recorded the poem in his own den at home, the den where he was still working on the complete taped history of his long years as one of America's great musicians. His sponsors let him have a free hand and a free head. The result is delightful. Over the 60 or more years when Armstrong was a great creative force in music, his work was always enriched by a wonderful sense of humor and true musical sentiment. This is the first "talking" record but we need not listen to him long to realize that there is music and love and warmth throughout.
This great man always bubbled with life and his version of "THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS" obviously tickled him deeply as it should his listeners. His ad lips, his accentuation and his pure delight with his "acting" are contagious and bring to us a piece of work which will make us appreciate his great talent year after year as we listen to his Christmas tribute.
It is also fitting that this, his "last" recording, should also be a "first" for him. It is the only time he has performed without his own music, but the song that was always in his heart comes through to all of us with his usual richness.
It is also just right, in my opinion, that the reverse side of the record brings us one of this versions of "WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN." This old classic has been a piece of jazz history as long as Louis Armstrong was. It could almost be this theme. And, furthermore, this is one of his finest interpretations of a historical jazz work.
Listen and laugh. Listen and remember. Christmas is a time of love and sentiment and joy. Louis Armstrong brought all of those things to all of us.
