Slip into your naughtiest nightie and fuzziest slippers and get ready to stay up way past bedtime with this, the ultimate collection of girl-grinding, sunshine-kissed sludge from So. Cal's underground phenom Teenacide Records. He became an indie icon triumphing/trashing the rock brat pack of the past decade in his zine Fruitbasket Upset and in the much-missed nightlife column Freek Show, but it wasn't until Teenacide team leader Jim Freek started bookin' the bands himself (at his raging Viva La Megababes shows) as well as recording them, that his time-warped music obsession was finally able to fizz and flourish. For Jimbo, life is like a hottub: steamy, bubbly and always more fun when there's a bevy of spunky girls around. So it's no surprise that the dude who brought us the frothy cool of the Shakes, the spliffed riffs of The Blondes and the not so square-pegged wave of The Checkers on previous releases, would start off '04 with this yummy candybox full o' female-fueled confections in the spirit of his Megababes events. Pajama Party features both familiar and fresh new femmes, with L.A. wonder women-led faves such as The Neptunas, The Holograms, Stimulator, Cheap Chick and The New Detectives forming the backbone of this bodacious romp. Newbies add raw and sassy appeal to the comp as well: from the cosmic crunch of Rocket (three blondes named Lauren who made up a band name and eventually tricked Jim into recording their eponymous ditty with 'em) to Morrisshi (the first all-lady tribute to Morrissey who're anything but morose on their cover of "Everyday is Like Sunday") to Soft Blue Lights' bittersweet tribute to KROQ DJ legend Rodney "What's Happening" Bingenheimer to the mysterious Missy Cheer Gurl, a 15-year-old cheerleader plucked from the parking lot of a Britney Spears concert at Dodger Stadium who croons about more than deodorant on "Still Smells Like Teen Spirit," it seems the Teenacide headquarters in Silverlake, CA. isn't just laying tomorrow's revvin' -gal and guy rockstars to tape, it's mining them as well. Seriously though, when it comes to meshing sticky sweet Phil Spector-style harmonics with cheesy prog-rock atmospherics and spiky punk-style punch, Pajama Party proves that nobody works it better than Freek and his Teenacide temptresses. Let the sonic pillow fight begin...
