Capitol Records, the major label of giant of '60s America and infamous for hesitating to sign up the Beatles, eventually succumbed to the contemporary, hip, commercial pressures of the period and joined in the mad rush to sign up psychedelic Rock acts of every shape and size.
Unfortunately for them they were a bit too late to grab the real prizes such as The Airplane and the Dead, but they did manage to bag Quicksilver Messenger Service and The Steve Miller Band, who would both have fruitful careers on the label. At the other end of the scale, Capitol also signed up a great many rather more obscure acts, who were given one albums worth of exposure before being consigned to Capitol's vault and the collectors market. True, not all of the labels output is worthy of praise and some of the more revered psychedelic classics were to make their appearance on the other record labels of the time, but there are certainly a number of Capitol releases that have the spark that makes them still shine today. One of these releases is the sole and eponymously titled LP by Gandalf, perhaps the most sought after Capitol Rarity, certainly one of the best albums of its kind.
Released only in America in 1969, with one 45 taken from the LP, Gandalf and their album are a mystery.
