Terrorizer's Secret History Of... Thrash Metal - Issue June 2011

THRASH FORWARD - THE FUTURE OF THRASH
It came from the underground, it rose to the mainstream, and finally, in the 1990s it almost disappered. But then, something unexpected happened. At the turn of the millenium, a host of new denim-clad warriors rose from the depths to bring Thrash back to the forefront of extreme music. Now, in 2011, Thrash Metal is as exciting as it's ever been. And here's 18 reasons why...

01. EVILE
What More is there to say about Evile? From unlikely underdogs to global-trotting heavyweights and Terrorizer coverstars, the UK’s own Evile have experienced the kind of maddening highs and unimaginable lows that many bands twice their age can barely fathom – and they’re only getting started. Having already toured with the likes of Megadeth, Exodus, Machine Head and Sabbat, the quartet have two critically-lauded albums under their belt, and with upcoming new opus ‘Five Serpents’ Teeth’, they look set to reaffirm their status as leaders of the thrash revival in spectacular fashion. Don’t say we didn’t warn you…

02. TOXIC HOLOCAUST
Believe it or not, the Portland blackened thrashers have been going strong for over a decade now, preceding the revival by a good few years. Luckily, they don’t look like letting up any time soon.

03. MALEFICE
Generally regarded as one of the UK’s most promising metal acts, Malefice fuse their brand of thrash with a slamming mixture of huge hooks and undeniably Dimebag-ish grooves. With a new album under their belts, the world is their oyster.

04. HAVOK
This Colorado four-piece pull no punches – they’re thrash-as-fuck, nothing more, nothing less. Simple. Formed in 2004, Havok recently dropped their excellent sophomore opus, ‘Time Is Up’.

05. SUICIDAL ANGELS
Repping for the Mediterranean is Greek thrashers Suicidal Angels, who smashed their way into the limelight by winning the 2009 Rock The Nation Award and releasing an excellent new full-length with ‘Dead Again’ the following year.

06. TORNADO
This multi-national mob garnered enough attention to be snapped up by Listenable Records late last year, dropping their outstandingly-titled debut ‘Amsterdamn Hellsinki’ the following Spring.

07. PASADENA NAPALM DIVISION
Formed by legendary frontman Kurt Brecht – known best from his time with crossover stalwarts DRI – Pasadena Napalm Division mash together hardcore punk basstones with a massive, crushing guitar tone and duel leads aplenty.

08. DIAMOND PLATE
Forcing their way out of the Chicago underground with their relentless assault of riffs and outstanding shredability, Diamond Plate have already notched up shows with the likes of Behemoth, Exodus, Overkill, DRI and Gojira. Not bad.

09. ARMOR COLUMN
The fact that this NY quintet use war films as inspiration and describes themselves as “power thrash” should tell you everything you need to know…

10. EVIL SURVIVES
Channeling their take on thrash through classic Maiden, Priest and Angel Witch influences, Evil Survives continue the rich vein of retro-styled thrashers and metallers that have emerged from Canada in recent years.

11. PREDATOR
Well for a start, they’re named after one of the most bad ass movie aliens of all time. Luckily, they also happen to know a thing or two about big riffs and big melodies.

12. REDMIST DESTRUCTION
Peddling a style of thrash that owes just a little to early Seps as well as the obligatory Slayer and Metallica nods, RMD are bringing Yorkshire crashing head-first into the thras revival.

13. RUINS OF EARTH
While certainly paying homage to some of thrash and death metal’s greats, Hampshire mob Ruins Of Earth are undeniably a 21st Century proposition! Slick, tight but relentlessly brutal all the same, this is a band who are doing ol’ Blighty proud.

14. SPEED/KILL/HATE
Born from the creative loins of a certain Dave Linsk of Overkill fame, Speed/Kill/Hate are certainly with the “name says it all” camp. Pummeling riffs and outrageous aural violence are the order of the day.

15. STRIKER
Another mob unashamed to vent their love of all things ‘80s, Striker pay homage to both their country-sharing forefathers and more recent peers – though calling them “retro” is by no means an insult.

16. HARM
Bile-ridden and hook-laden in equal measure, Harm are doing their Norwegian brothers and sisters proud with a crushing mixture of king-sized riffs and gnarly shred action.

17. HOSPITAL OF DEATH
Originally formed way back in 1994 to play a solitary, three-song gig, Hospital Of Death returned in 2008 and have since released two full-length cuts of tongue-in-cheek speed-thrash bangers. Want riffs, shred, circle pits and belly-laughs in equal measure? You know where to get your fix.

18. JUGGERNØRT
Representing our fair capital, London four-piece Juggernørt certainly earn their battle-hardened moniker, fusing a mixture of huge grooves, whiplash-including riffs and a level of precision that belies their relatively new status. Nice one.

Somit gibt es also häufig angebliche Treffer.
