LIVE AND LOUD – Choice cuts from 2003-2005 at the Annandale. By Kelsey Munro
Fuck This…I’m Going to the Annandale
Magic Dirt, Gyroscope, Cog, Electric Six, The Mess Hall, Shihad, Dallas Crane
Directed by Peter Dowson and Livecast

Aside from the derailment in early-2000, when the bands were shunted out of the pub in favour of more lucrative poker machines, the Annandale Hotel has long been a mainstay of the Sydney live music scene. And since they took over the hotel, brothers Matt and Dan Rule have done everything they can do to keep it that way – including letting the crew from Livecast film the bands over the last couple of years. Far from being a lo-fi, home video operation, the shoots often involve up to five or six cameras and give the bands the professional rendering they deserve – something the local scene has often lacked for funding or other reasons. It looks really good, the sound quality is mostly great, but the one-band-one-song format is a little inconsistent at times – just as you’re getting into a performance, it cuts to something completely different. But if your taste is eclectic and you treat this DVD like a sampler – or a contemporary snapshot of the live scene – it’s great. Songs from Magic Dirt, the Mess Hall, After The Fall, Isis, the Bronx, Shihad and the Dillinger Escape Plan are clear-cut standouts – sweaty, powerful and energized. All that’s missing is the cigarette smoke.
THE MAKING OF...

F**K THIS... I'M GOING TO THE ANNANDALE brings home the bacon from over 18 months of outstanding performances captured by the Livecast crew. The DVD is unique because it has been put together by real music fans who believe in the cause, and as such, it represents a milestone in Australian live music history.

Some of the clips go back as far as 2 years. Witness an amazing 2003 performance by Dallas Crane (featuring Jed Kurzel from The Mess Hall), and Bluebottle Kiss featuring members who've since split off to form The Devoted Few (also featured on the DVD). Other clips are plucked from more recent shows such as The Dillinger Escape Plan's demolition of the Annandale stage in March this year. Shihad's triumphant return is another featured show that stands out in recent memory.

Highlights include Magic Dirt at their finest kick-starting the DVD with "Vulcanella", and a 14 minute epic rendition of "The Way She Does" by UK group The Stands. Pete tells the story: "That show was just incredible, it was a Monday night & I had no idea who The Stands even were. Matt & Dan (owners of the Annandale Hotel) told me it was going to be a magic night, so I set-up a simple 2 camera shoot. What we got was an hour of world-class musicianship and it seemed to spiral into this 14 minute epic. I've watched a lot of people's reactions to this clip & I guarantee everyone's jaw is just going to drop when the band kicks in for the finale!"

The Annandale DVD is divided into 2 'set-lists' following the format of a dirty weekend at the Annandale. The 'Friday Night Setlist' features a rock & roll oriented lineup, with The Mess Hall, and The City Lights brushing shoulders with Detroit's The Electric Six and Welsh angst-merchants Mclusky. 'Saturday Night Setlist' steps up a gear with The Butterfly Effect, After The Fall, and Shihad shredding up the stage. Before long Saturday winds it's way into darker territory with menacing performances by The Icarus Line & Tourettes. Stoner rock fans will be delighted to find a 21 minute track by Brant Bjork & the Bros (ex-Kyuss) just before the coup-de-gras delivered by The Dillinger Escape Plan.

"I love having editorial control on Livecast projects", Pete enthuses. "Putting a 21 minute stoner rock epic on the DVD is just unheard of - it's just so f**king cool! I get emails every week from folks begging for some Brant Bjork footage - this is my way of saying thanks for being so persistent, enjoy it all - a DVD within the DVD".

TRIBUTE TO CATE DAHL (tongues)

The Annandale DVD is dedicated to Cate Dahl, the singer of local band 'tongues' who tragically took her own life last year. A clip of out-takes gathered from tongues recording sessions can be found in the bonus features section of the DVD. Pete explains why such an important release for Livecast & The Annandale is dedicated to a relatively unknown artist from Glebe.

"This local band started playing the Dale & straight away I was impressed with their sound & live performance. They were putting their album together and we had them tagged for big things. Next thing I heard was a rumour Cate had committed suicide, and I was floored to find out it was true - so much talent & potential just gone. What really got to me was how little mention it got - a few vague snippets in the local street press."

Pete wasn't about to let it drop off the radar so easily. "I guess the lack of coverage made me angry & I didn't want Cate or tongues to fade into obscurity - they deserve much better. When the DVD was being finalised I realised I had the opportunity to put together a tribute clip cut from grainy out-takes that represent the last footage we'll ever have. We were their 'local' - tongues played their first show at the Dale & they got signed here. It's not going to change the course of history, but dedicating the DVD to Cate simply felt like the right thing to do".

F**K THIS I'M GOING TO THE ANNANDALE is available in all good record stores now via Reverberation. And of course you can buy the DVD over the bar at The Annandale Hotel.

MORE ABOUT LIVECAST

The concept for filming live shows at the Annandale Hotel stems from the dedication of Livecast Director, Peter Dowson, to documenting the live music scene in Sydney, Australia. Inspired by gritty bootlegs of his favourite bands like The Dead Kennedys, Metallica, and the Birthday Party, Pete realised that live music videos somehow seemed to stay relevant over time, while cheesy concept clips just faded away.

He delves into his passion further: "There is something directly appealing, and brutally honest about live music videos - they capture a moment of pure energy & life-force that can be absorbed & enjoyed for generations".

Starting out with a cheap DV camera, Pete began capturing footage of his favourite local bands around Sydney before settling into the Annandale Hotel as resident videographer. "The Annandale was just the perfect head-quarters for capturing live shows. The owners, crew, and staff are all into the music as much as I am, so it's the natural place to settle in & start filming what goes on in the live scene. I feel like a kid in the candy store getting to see so many awesome bands coming through these doors".

Before long he found similar-minded people like Burnie Malletin (Audio Engineer) coming in and volunteering their time & energy in helping out. Thus Livecast was born, and the fledgling crew started doing multi-camera shoots & editing up their own footage - always with permission! Now Livecast has a core team of 7 people, and operates twin studios upstairs at the Dale, with a 24 channel multi-track recording facility and a video editing / post-production suite directly above the stage.

- 2013 rizzrecords.com:
Lime ended towards the end of the 90's and after a few years in hibernation Cath and Dave emerged with a new project. Cath's outpouring of great songs was becoming more prolific and with this a change in their musical direction towards a more punk tinged post grunge sound. Roping in old band mate from their days with Mother Hubbard Kinnon Holt the nucleus of Tongues was formed in 2002. Finding the right rhythm section took longer than expected but by mid 2003 the line-up was finalised with Brad Kimber - Drums & Martin Carr - Bass. Recording for their album was half way through by the time of the final line-up so what you get on the album is almost all Cath & Dave with some rockin' guitar injection from Kinnon. The band started to hone their live set during the rest of 2003 and by early 2004 had changed into a formidable live band with a huge triple guitar attack roaring from the stage. Laughing Outlaw Records got behind the band and by May 2004 the album was ready to be launched. To the very great sadness of everyone involved Cath passed away in June 2004 just weeks after their album was released. "Ugly" is a brilliant piece of punk pop with layers of filthy sludgy guitar and dynamite feels provided by Cath & Dave. A wonderful album that disappeared from the music world before it even started."

Somit gibt es also häufig angebliche Treffer.
