The "S" (ostensibly for "symphony") is formed from a backwards treble clef, while the "M" (ostensibly for "Metallica") is taken from the band's classic logo.
The name of the album is a play on sadism and masochism (also represented by S&M).
recorded with the San Francisco Symphony on April 21 & 22 1999 at Berkeley Community Theatre (Michael Kamen scored the symphonic arrangements and conducted the orchestra during the concert). This is the last album to feature bassist Jason Newsted.
