The new BABY WOODROSE Album “Third Eye Surgery” has just been published via Bad Afro Records, few months after the re-issue of “Love Comes Down” in the end of October 2011.
Psychedelic walls of sound come forward as “Down To The Bottom” gets right to you, garnished by the hypnotic vocals of Mr. Woodrose himself. It’s almost like listening Austin Powers, an acoustic time capsule that has been created in the 60s and is revealing the sounds and emotions of the past. Not that much uplifting compared to the songs on “Love Comes Down”, more to get deeper into your own feeling, whatever they might be. The bass and percussions are the ever present base and modern effects that seem to derive from some sort of tool or industrial machine male it hard to resist “Waiting For The War”.
The third track “Dandelion” offers some female vocals in addition to the tonal weaving of strings and flutes. The tracks are just floating by like summer days that seem to pass too soon. Organs, bass and drums on “It’s Just A Rise” add a kind of Jeffersonian touch – Jefferson as in Jefferson Airplane of course. If you ever wondered what that certain “Mr. Tambourine Man” ended up doing, I guess he might went to Denmark and joined BABY WOODROSE…More psychedelic sound creations and the first truly distorted guitars are offered on the “Bullshit Detector” – and isn’t this what we are all looking for?! Distorted guitars, oh yeah! Up next is “Nothing Is Real”, which has been published as a single prior to the album. With “Love Is Like A Flower” and “Third Eye Surgery” the album gets even more into the hippy section, with, as the modern-day writer would call it “Bollywood” instruments, that fill the air with curry flavour (well not really, but I think one gets the point). The final track “Honalee” is like a glittering, shimmering rainbow, something I can’t quite get behind, but it totally gets me since I’m all into unicorns, fairy dust and creatures living in a cave behind a waterfall. The whole songs relinquish the use of drums which makes it even more soulful and gives the album a quite and pensive ending.
BABY WOODROSE appear more mature on “Third Eye Surgery”, still they are way more into the 60s than before. It’s just a ride and if your into retro sounds, your third eye might open and discover the spirit of the age of Aquarius. And if you just enjoy a good tune, you will like it anyway! Psychorizon strongly recommends to listen to the album as a whole, as it’s so full of different moods and takes you around a real magic carpet ride as they just merge into each other. I do apologise for all these weird hints, but the album just made me think about so many great bands and tunes from the past…I just could not help it!
